HISTORY
The U. S. Army Corps of Engineers
operates the John H. Kerr Reservoir. The impoundment
of Kerr Reservoir was originally authorized for the
purpose of flood control and hydroelectric generation.
Various laws and regulations have expanded the reservoir’s
operating authorities to include fish and wildlife conservation,
recreation and water supply. The reservoir has a shoreline
of approximately 800 miles and a water surface of approximately
48,900 acres. The reservoir extends approximately 39
miles upstream of the dam on the Roanoke River and approximately
19 miles upstream on the Dan River above its junction
with the Roanoke River. The John H. Kerr Reservoir is
located in a predominately rural area within the piedmont
of Virginia and North Carolina. To say Kerr Lake is
big is an understatement. The lake is one of the largest
lakes in the Southeast and is also one of the most beautiful.
From wooded shores to secluded coves, Kerr Lake offers
fishing, boating, camping, swimming, hiking, picnicking
and skiing. The lake has 11 parks and recreation areas.
There are two marinas ( Satterwhite Point Marina and
Steele Creek Marina) and numerous boat ramps for easy
access to the lake. The marina offers fishing equipment,
fuel, repairs and more. The reservoir provides habitat
for many fish species including largemouth and striped
bass, catfish, crappies and more and plays host to numerous
state and national fishing tournaments. Along this beautiful,
tranquil shoreline, Lakeshores Plantation was created.
